production method | 1. Note 1 the use of hydrogen fluoride and boron trifluoride is dangerous, the whole operation should be carried out in the fume hood, the relevant precautions see the installation of the stirrer on the polyethylene reactor, the air-rest inlet tube (extending to the liquid level) and the air-rest outlet tube shall be connected with a T-shaped tube before the air-rest inlet tube for slow flow of dry nitrogen. The reactor contained 900 of dry nitromethane and was cooled to -20 °c. With stirring, 60g (3.0 mol) of anhydrous hydrogen fluoride, 204g (3.0 mol) of boron trifluoride and 276g (6.0 mol) of nitrogen dioxide were added in this order slowly. The rate of addition of each agent was controlled to keep the temperature below 0 °c. When nitrogen dioxide is added, a precipitate of fluoroborate is formed. The white precipitate was collected by filtration in a dry box. Washing with 3 portions of 5 ml nitromethane and 3 portions of 75 ml carbon tetrachloride was continued and dried in a vacuum oven at 50-100 °c overnight. The yield was 341g and 97%. |
